Summer House Cleaning

As you’ve probably noticed, we’re just changing things up here on the Product Ideas team, and going for a new approach. Some of our series are closing down temporarily, and we’re going to focus on short-term PI series to collect your feedback for Google products.

This doesn’t mean you’ll never be able to be a part of a Product Ideas series for iGoogle, Mobile, or any of the other products we’ve featured. Instead, we’ll do a PI series for a product when that team is best able to act and respond to your ideas.

Simply put, we’ve always felt that the whole Product Ideas experience should be exciting and fun. It’s a chance for Product Managers and Product Support Teams to learn more about users. More important, it’s a chance for users to become advocates for what’s important in the products that they use. Moving to this new approach means that the PI team can focus more fun and better results into each series that we do. And it gives us time to make cool videos.

The one thing I miss on Google is: a forum. Better yet: an email address. I keep asking myself when I look at google.com: where is the 'Buzz Google about this'-button? Where the possibility for users to rate it? And why not let people dream of pointing out the golden idea to the big G?

Last but not least: please ditch blogger. It's dashboard lacks functionality when compared to the db of Tumblr and the rapidly growing functionality of both Facebook and Twitter. Blogger has just had its day.

Also, its tabbed, so you can have multiples and name/categorize (like excel?)

Coming back on the "merge ideas" idea, have a system that finds similar keywords while you type and offers similar ideas so you end up voting instead of creating 2x the same idea...
would save you some time and would let you focus more on main ideas

I'd like to suggest a "bottom line" function for Google Spreadsheet, allowing the user to highlight a bunch of cells (e.g. a set of Countif formulae or the bottom line in an extensive spreadsheet) and have them popped out into a small window that hovers on top of the spreadsheet and refreshes as the rest of the sheet is worked on. Sadly, there no longer seems to be a forum for making such suggestions.

Might I suggest that you re-open the suggestions forum, and that this suggestion should be adopted there? Or is that too self-referential? ;)

I'm not sure why most of comments above have nothing to do with Google Ideas improvement. Perhaps, it's better to moderate them out.

In addition to what DaleFlannery and gbardon said above (["mark read" checkbox] and [finding similar keywords while you type and offers similar ideas so you end up voting instead of creating 2x the same idea]) I would ask Google Ideas Team to
1) Display a Status of each submitted idea (i.e. Not seen by Google yet, Rejected, Accepted, Implemented);
2) Allow for external links to ideas (or my ideas), so that one could share her ideas with friends or co-workers.

There are plenty of well-developed bug reporting systems on the market, it make sense to analyze them and to implement appropriate features in Google Ideas.

I don't think Google is taking Product Ideas seriously.

The search feature on the site doesn't work, despite multiple "ideas" posted suggesting that they fix it (I'd include links, but none of the pages have bookmarkable URLs that I can find):
* "Can't search for anything. Always returns empty."
* "Nothing ever shows up when I search."
* "Searching with some keywords of top ideas yielded no results."
* "Search doesn't work for any of the product ideas areas except Mobile."

Too bad the site isn't indexed, or I'd use a search engine to find previously posted ideas:
* http://www.google.com/search?q=search+site%3Aproductideas.appspot.com

As a user a wish to suggest you new product for google.
I think you have to start "Google Games" service for the user's of google.By doing this you will get a huge response(According to me).Make it social networking game product,It will increase popularity of Google definitely. You will also put down to other social gaming sites.
Other suggestion is to start social networking site only for Business & industries. For that you have to verify wheather or not this industry is certified bu Govt.

According to me adding these products in google services, will get market share from 60% to 70-75%.

(I am just suggesting you,b'coz I am user of Google
for google team :please, please send me your reply to my email id.)

Not sure where to leave this wonderful idea. I'm sure hope someone important will read this post on its way around. Idea is...on the Google search home page, once you search your "Topic:" you should have a page numbering on the top as well as you do on the bottom already ie: 1,2,3,4....20,21,22,23,24. maybe not on the first page listings "money making reasons" but maybe after page 2 or something. It would be easier to navigate that way.

The genealogy is becoming popular on the Internet thanks to collaborative systems easy to use and 2.0 inputs. In contacts of social networks, like Facebook, an important part of it consist in family members. Companies like MyHeritage or Genoom has millions of records of personal contacts organized in family trees.
However, the genealogy is not fully integrated into Internet and are just a few who provide the data of millions of family members dead or alive. Not so with social networks, where user involvement is much more active.
Google tries to take a long time become a leader in the field of social networks. Join the genealogical databases and personal contacts in a collaborative network would be really fascinating. Google already has integration tools: gmail, contacts, calendar, picasa, youtube, maps ... Imagine the possibilities of linking a family tree in Google's social network: family, ancestors, friends, relatives, neighbors, coworkers or studies, suppliers ... Contact details would be updated by each user, you share photos with family members and selected friends directly, you find out if your friend's friend is your cousin, the calendar will warn you of birthdays and events, you'd see on a map the situation of your family and the proximity to others contacts, you could see grow your family tree and relations with the intervention of others.Google will warn of matching contacts and with permission could merge trees ...
The creation of a network integrated the family with other contacts would be something closer to reality and really fascinating. The family is in fact very important in real life, why not integrated into a real Internet social network?
I´ve some mores ideas of how to integrate social a family network in a profitable way.

Are Product Ideas taken seriously by Google? I see in the FAQ that it says "...we will be removing ideas from the list after they have been implemented so that other ideas can be more visible". However, when I look at the list of PIs for Google Sites a) There are a number of ideas that have been implemented (eg horizontal navigation menus) that have not been removed. b) there is not a single 'answered' idea and c) there are many many ideas in that section that have nothing whatever to do with the Google Sites product at all.

Anyone with a serious interest in making suggestions for improving Google Sites would very quickly form the impression that using this forum to make suggestions is a total waste of time!

While reading on the cases at Groklaw this evening it occurred to me that the best thing to do might be to get together the Google folks, the Sun/Java "refugees", and the KDE folks (and I reckon the Gnome folks too, I just have a preference for KDE) take the best ideas from everybody everywhere and do a shiny new GPL build of what might be considered todays ideal write once-read anywhere language along with a new "standard" set of UI's and API's and call it "KAVA"
That's about all I have to suggest, on this matter anyway....

You have a product (Android-tablet form), you want mass acceptance. Here is a way. I use the HP TC1100 even today, 800mhz XP tablet edition. At the time it's price put it out of everyone's hands. So what most don't know is how absolutely AMAZING the ability to take notes are with
1)MS pen writing technology
2)Tablet's usefulness design and features. Two HUGE design points should not be overlooked!
3)Note taking app, Franklin Covey Tabletplanner v3.0.
This is killer combo!! The only thing that is wrong with this setup is battery life. TC1100 is EOL and Hp will not update the design. So what would make a android tablet really take off?
1)Pen writing, good tech not crap.
2)Snappy performance.
3)Loooonng battery life. 6-8hrs
4)A great (very well organized) note-taking app, not a app mushed together to grab some bucks.
5)Button to switch between finger or pen. Apple purposely missed the boat for that one, they need next gen sales which why I'll wait.
DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT! Your google, so you have some bucks. Go to EBAY buy the HP combo outlined above, (buy a xtra 1gig mem replacement). Then use it real world for couple of weeks and see what the heck I'm talking about. I used this all semester but got frustrated by battery life. Not to mention people thought it was Ipad. When I tell them it's very very expensive tablet from 2003 they look at me odd. "Yeah, go figure" I say. A $150 Android tablet with great ->pen-based<-note-taking ability will be worth it just for that function putting it in hands of college students around the world reducing paper litter, not to mention improving grades as other academic apps pop up. Microsoft's new tablet is going to be a monster because of these features! Don't say you didn't know because now you do!

I would love to see the "labels" for all Google products aligned. I have one life, thus one set of labels: "work", "family", "work/project 1", "work/project 2", "pictures", "invitations" ...

The labels in my calendar are the same as the labels in my GMail and Contacts.

This way, whenever a contact e-mails you, based on the group that contact is in, labels can be applied to the e-mail / calendar items related to this mail.

I have an idea, but can't find a place to share it. Maybe it'll be seen here. There needs to be a way to hide contacts in Gmail. Eg: I blocked a person from calling me in google voice, and now I don't want to see them listed in Gmail and on my Android phone. But if I delete them, then I assume the GV block will be removed. There needs to be a way to keep them, so they can remain blocked, but also avoid every having to see them, unless you're looking through your "blocked" list.

Google, if you're listening, Facebook just messed up in my opinion. As you probably know they redesigned their profile. It has destroyed the dynamic of facebook, its like a career site now and they have removed a very VERY important feature: the status.

I am sure you get what I mean with how important this is. Facebook is a social networking site, this means personal thought that you want to highlight with a status right at the top, on a prominent place. This is gone and so has the meaning of facebook for me.

So why do I post this here? Because you can take advantage of their mistake. Sounds stupid but I actually trust Google more than Zuckerburg. Google has never given me the feeling that they are untrustworthy, Google is in my opinion a little dorky haha. That's also why I trust you.

But you guys need to get to work fast. To get to the point: Buzz is boring. Sorry. Even the name is boring. The whole launch never even remotely tickled my fancy. Guys, do something. Change the name, be open, apologise for Buzz and come with something bloody cool!!!! ChatterBox or something GoogleBox, GoogleWorld, GoogleZoo? Buzz was completely out of line of your usual products. Make it simple but smooth. Profile picture, status, photo's, thoughts of the day. Smooth, fast and integrated with Gmail. I liked Buzz's caution with privacy when I reactivated it ten minutes ago. Keep that!!! keep transparency and don't be sneaky with making business related policy changes. Keep it open. We're all grown ups. Facebook is playing games, unreliable and just plain annoying.

So I repeat: simple but smooth; profile picture, status, about me, photos, videos, thoughts of the day, stories... that's it. Smooth, fast and integrated with Gmail. Transparent and simple privacy rules. Keep it casual and funny. Simple layout, simple colour schemes. Make it easy for my friends to find out what I am doing and who I am.

Take advantage!!

Cheers Gj

OK, so I can't suggest an idea elsewhere on the ENTIRETY of the Google Mobile site, so I figured this would be the only place for it. It's really straightforward, and I'm staggered it hasn't been done yet, but can you please make the Google suite of applications operational whilst offline?

For example, I have reduced my use of Google documents, as I can't view / edit docs without a connection, unless I buy third party software (such as DocsPics).

Surely I can't be the only person who finds this absurd - Google documents is a fantastic product, Android phones are clearly amongst the best in the market, but the lack of cohesion between facilities provided by GOOGLE THEMSELVES detracts hugely from the app itself.

Hi!

Regarding Android.

I have a need. A GREAT need. I many with me.

I use a bletooth headset and almost every day I call someone by misstake by double clicking on the headset. It could be very embarrassing. I don't really understand why they have this function and why you can't disable it. Most bluetooth users don't keep the headset on the ear when they're not speaking in it.

- Anyway I want an app that simply have the choice to disable the double click redial function for the bluetooth headset.

And while your at it I also have an other problem with bluetooth and Android. Then I answer on my bluetooth headset the phone unlocks the screen lock, and where do you keep the phone when you answer with bluetooth? In the pocket. Now I have to pick up the phone just to lock the screen after I hang up. And if I'm unlycky the phone hangs up for me, in the pocket, during the call.

- Simply I also want the app to be able to make the screen to NOT unlock then the call is anwered on the bluetooth headset.

I don't know the limitations in Android and bluetooth, but this should be doable and fairly simple to do. And I would certainly pay for such an app.

And if you google on in you'll se that many more will.

I know that this problem is already on the forums, but this is the official request for an app that fixes the problem.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I've submitted some ideas to Google Buzz in the Product Ideas page, but whenever I try to access them (using the "x many ideas" link on the left pane) I get redirected to http://www.google.com/productideas/. The page seems to be broken for days now. I don't believe this is a problem on my side (Win 7, Firefox 3.6 or Chrome 9.0.x). Anybody aware of this?

This new approach of allowing comments only on a couple of products currently receiving attention strikes my as counter-productive (and annoying as hell).

So we're supposed to hold onto our good ideas that are "off topic" until Google should deign to give that topic some attention? Hey, isn't the purpose of topics or tags to give you an opportunity to gather related ideas at such time as you should have time to think about them?

Ben said...

Not sure if I am leaving this in the right are, but here it goes, I believe that there should be an ability in google contacts for gmail to send out a survey or questionnaire that will allow for your contacts to update the info you have stored for them. For instance, I have Jim's email, but not his address or phone number. I send a request from with in contacts that he can respond to by simply filling in the fields that will automatically update my contact info for him. If he sends the address, I get that, and if he doesn't want me to have his phone number he will omit that info and it will stay empty. It is easier for one to type his one info 100 times then it is to look up and type everyone elses. A step further, the user would have the ability to accept or deny Jim's changes when Jim replies. This ideas would beat out many of the contact manager software out there and would take social networking to a new level of security and access of info. Thank You, Ben Gillette

Gmail definately is ready to rival exchange but BI is the fastest growing area of IT.
